Returns and Unsold Copies
By Tyler Wood
When my book was finally published, I thought the hard part was over. The writing was done. The editing was complete. The book was printed and placed into distribution.
What I didn’t expect was how quickly returns and unsold copies would eat into my profits.
The Reality I Faced as an Author
A large portion of my printed books were sent to retailers under traditional distribution terms. When those books didn’t sell, they came back damaged, unsellable, and completely on my expense sheet.
Here’s what that meant for me:
• Money wasted on printing books that never reached readers
• Storage and handling fees for returned inventory
• Delayed royalties and unpredictable income
• Constant anxiety before every new print run
My book wasn’t failing but the distribution model was.
The Core Problem
Like many authors, I was printing based on hope, not demand. Traditional distribution pushes bulk placement, but it doesn’t protect authors from losses. Retailers take no risk authors do.
I needed a system that worked in my favor.
The Strategy That Changed Everything
I shifted to a demand-first, author-controlled distribution approach, designed to reduce risk and protect revenue:
• Print-on-Demand instead of large print runss
• Validated demand before printing, not after
• Focused sales channels instead of blanket retail placement
• Digital formats (eBooks & audiobooks) to expand reach without inventory riskn
• Marketing tied directly to distribution, not separated from it
Every copy printed now had a purpose and a buyer.
The Results
Within months, the impact was undeniable:
• Returns dropped by over 60%.
• Inventory waste was reduced by nearly half
• Cash flow became predictable
• Royalties increased because losses disappeared
• I finally felt confident launching new titles
For the first time, my book worked like a business not a gamble.
Why This Matters for Authors
If you’re printing books without proven demand, you’re risking your time, money, and momentum. Returns and unsold copies are one of the biggest reasons authors struggle to scale yet no one warns you about them.
The right distribution strategy doesn’t just sell books
It protects authors.
My Takeaway
Writing the book is only half the journey..
Smart distribution is what turns authors into earners.o
If you’re tired of watching your profits disappear into returns, it’s time to rethink how your book reaches readers.
